Historical Background

It opened its doors in 1906, in Soonan, in the outskirts of Pyungyang, now in North Korea. In April 1931, the ministerial department of the school moved to Seoul. World War II, however, forced the closure of the institution. It was reopened in 1949 at the present site, only to be closed again when the Korean War broke out in June 1950. The school reopened in November 1950. In 1962, the government granted permission to operate Sahmyook Industrial Junior College, with agriculture and home economics as emphases. In 1966, the institution was renamed Sahmyook College, and in 1992 took the name Sahmyook University.
